Plant Dyed Hand Knits
Home
Since moving to the countryside a couple of years ago, where we live on an Estate surrounded by 600 acres of woodland, I have become absorbed in growing cut flowers and, more recently, dyeing wool with plants: weld, nettles, walnut, silver birch, dahlias, hollyhocks, daisies etc. So much so that my usual work (painting) has been almost totally cast aside! The colours produced are gorgeous and quite unlike most wool you can buy commercially. They have an old fashioned look to them: pale custard yellows and fern greens, fawns, greys and pinky browns reminiscent of the 30's and 40'.
Consequently, I started to research vintage children's knitting patterns and rediscovered how beautifully crafted knitwear used to be. Having found some ladies around the country who, between them, have centuries of knitting experience I started to build a collection of the sort of knitwear I wish I had discovered when my own children were a bit younger.
In the near future I will start using organic wool. I want to extend this reconnection with nature that I have begun and hope that you, like me, appreciate this collection of beautiful, unique, natural, well-crafted, children's clothes.
